Time Traveler's Wife

Just finished reading The Time Traveler's Wife. Possibly one the the greatest romance novels I've ever read.
Not going to lie, it made me cry.
I'm a sucker for happy endings, no matter how unrealistic it is.. therefore it's unfortunate that if it ended any other way it wouldn't have been as profound.
Why is it the most realistic books end in either misery or death?
